Friday 18th September 2015 was a magic day for Rhigos Sports Hall when legendary Wales flanker, Dai Morris officially opened the new Weights Gym.

Dai Morris, the finest sportsman or woman to come from the village said that he was delighted to open this facility which he hoped would improve the health and fitness of current and future generations of Rhigos young men and women.

Dai said he was also pleased that the room has been named the Allan Woodward Gym in memory of Allan who had worked tirelessly to provide sporting opportunities for the people of Rhigos through his leadership of Rhigos Community Sports Hall and Rhigos Sports Football Club.

Allan’s daughter Kerry and grand children Lucy and Richard and his great friend Dai Parker were also present. Kerry spoke for them all when she said that the whole family were pleased that the gym had been named in memory of her father who had devoted so much time to its development. She was sure he was looking down kindly and had stopped the rain that at one time threatened to spoil the occasion.

The Allan Woodward gym was built with funds provided by the Tower Fund and Celtic Energy and on behalf of the Tower Fund, Josh King presented Elfed Bowen Davies for Rhigos Community Sports Association with a commemorative plaque. Josh said that as a Sports Hall user he was particularly pleased that the gym build was the first completed Legacy Project for Tower Fund.

As well as Sports Hall staff (Jackie) and management committee also present with Dai Morris were Rebecca and Michelle from RCT Sport, Ben Male, fitness instructor, Lee and Josh from Tower Fund, Andrew from RCT Homes, Anthony from Walters UK, Kerry, Lucy, Richard and Dai for the family, Pat and Rita for Rhigos Community Council and Graham Thomas for RCT County Borough Council.

Fittingly, as senior politician present, Graham had the last word when he said the Allan Woodward Gym indeed the whole Rhigos Sports Hall facility was a fine example of what dedicated volunteers can do with limited resources. The Rhigos Community Sports Hall has become a centre for sport and recreation in the north of Cynon Valley and long may it continue to prosper.

Weights Room

The new Weights Room is open. Ben Male has been running inductions and over 20 people were inducted during the first 2 weeks of the price holiday deal that we introduced so people could suck it and see.

From Monday August 3rd we started to charge users at monthly rate of £20 for Rhigos residents and £25 for everyone else or £2.50 per session.

The feedback is very positive. Although the facility is not very big it will house 6 people at a time and you have to remember that Rhigos is not very big. Improvements mentioned are:

Mirrors – we have got some and are going to put them up soon

Punchbag – perhaps

Legpress – perhaps

We want to set up a Weights Room club led by Ben and anyone interested in joining Ben and the keyholders (Dan Twin and Jonny) in planning the club should contact Clive or Jacky or Ben in the office.

We hope that the extra income from the Weights Room will help the Sports Hall to be self sufficient financially so that the Sports Hall can benefit the people of Rhigos for many years to come.

Weights Room

Free weights have been acquired and Richard Smith has installed them all. We are now just going to build the machines we had from the old Sobells Centre and we should be ready to open. We are all getting really excited about the opening and hoping the Weights Room will be a valuable addition to the facilities available here at Rhigos.

Big thanks to Richard, Jonny and Ian Smith, Duane Dudley, Steve Davies and Ben Male for all their help to date.
